API: Unable to create post on behalf of user when board is private

When using the API, despite using my own API key, it seems like if I try and create a post and assign it to a user it says it's not authorised. I assume this is because the board is set to private but would expect to still be able to post on behalf of someone else like I can in the UI. Is there a way around that at all
